The chassis dynamics rig is undoubtedly the most complex tool in the Research & Development department, of any Formula 1 team, and serious race team to be exact.

The Renault team produced this video that shows the rig in action. Here we see the R30 being put through its paces on the rig.

The complete car is attached on seventeen servo-hydraulic actuators, which replicate the forces the car undergoes on the racetrack. There are 14 actuators underneath the wheels, which apply vertical and horizontal forces, and another three under the floor to replicate the aerodynamic forces.

The thing that will probably be the most stunning is the amount of energy that goes through the car when out on the track. When we watch the cars on television, things usually seem pretty smooth and calm, but the chassis rig reveals just how much energy and vibration the cars have to endure during a Grand Prix.
