Sergio Pérez (McLaren MP4-28) ended his day's work at Barcelona, testing ahead of the 2013 Formula 1 season, at the top of the time sheet.
The Mexican, who is filling in the shoes of Lewis Hamilton at the Woking-based team this season, extracted a lap in 1min21.848s out of his new car.
His mark could not even be beaten by Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull RB9), who was left second. The German, it must be said, spent most of his Wednesday afternoon trying to complete a race simulation.
Multiple problems slowed him down.
Kimi Räikkönen (Lotus E21), who managed the third fastest lap, was slowed down by problems too. The Finn had to make due with only the afternoon to run because of a gearbox problem.
Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes W04) and Fernando Alonso (Ferrari F138) completed the top five.
The Brit concentrated his efforts around the 'Coanda' exhaust of his silver arrow. Meanwhile, Spaniard Alonso, who said yesterday of his new car that it was "ok", was fighting bodywork problems.
At Williams, Valtteri Bottas took over testing duties over from Pastor Maldonado. The rookie clocked the sixth fastest lap aboard the controversial FW35.
Paul di Resta quietly took the Force India VJM06, that potential teammates Adrian Sutil and Jules Bianchi will be driving later this week, to eighth fastest.
Charles Pic (Caterham CT03) was slowest of the pack for a second consecutive day.
