Work on a new formula one standard road circuit began near Moscow, Russia on Wednesday, the Russian media said. Is this the first step towards the organisation of the first Grand Prix of Russia?

We reported earlier this year that Hans Geist, formerly in charge of Formula 1 projects in Austria and Bahrain, is to oversee the construction of Moscow Raceway, located 77 kilometres west of Moscow in the town of Volokolamsk.

The Hermann Tilke designed circuit, to bid for DTM, FIA GT and MotoGP races, is slated to be completed in 2010.

"The track will be designed to formula one standards. But the operator may not necessarily have a grand prix, even if the opportunity would be accepted if presented," Geist said earlier this year.

Russian media on Wednesday said the cost of the project is $215 millions (5.5 billion roubles).
