Subaru's WRX and STI models will no longer carry the Impreza name starting with the 2013 model year. After a complete redesign, both cars will use a separate platform, effectively breaking WRX and STI ties with the Impreza model.
The move will allow for a more direct and successful marketing campaign for the STI and WRX. Subaru will have the opportunity to market the WRX and STI more easily as performance cars with premium interiors and features that justify a significantly higher price.
With the separation of the WRX and STI, Subaru will also be able to focus on the redesigned 2012 Impreza. Improved fuel economy and roomier interior are key in the compact-car market and weren't a top priority when it came to the sportier WRX and STI models.
The current WRX and STI models will continue on the Impreza platform until 2013.
