The president of Honda Motor Co., Takanobu Ito, said the Japanese automaker is planning to launch a worldwide investigative airbag recall and even offer support if its airbag supplier, Takata, runs into financial difficulties.
After initially limiting the U.S. recall to humid regions, Honda was forced to issue a nationwide recall given new incidents in California and North Carolina. Five people have died as a direct result of the faulty airbag inflators.
“If the same problem exists, we want to respond the same way everywhere,” Ito said of plans for a global recall campaign, while adding that Honda will ask Takata to repay the recall costs.
There is growing frustration with the response of Takata, and several other automakers have issued recalls.
