The Dodge Journey-based Fiat Freemont will make its global debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show before going on sale during the second half of this year, the company announced.

The Italian model will have the same size, seating capability and equipment as its American counterpart, including soft-touch materials, 17-inch wheels, keyless entry and start, 8.4-inch touchscreen radio interface, seven airbags, ABS with brake assist and LED taillights.

Unlike the Journey, however, the Fiat Freemont will offer two trim levels and four different powerplants. A pair of 2.0-litre diesels – one producing 140 horsepower and the other, 170 – will be available and both will team up with a manual gearbox.

All-wheel drive, an automatic transmission and Chrysler's 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 will be added to the mix shortly after the initial launch.

The Freemont will be produced in the Mexican plant of Toluca, where the 500 is manufactured for the US market. We still don't know if Fiat plans to sell it in North America, but that seems very unlikely given the striking similarities between the Journey and Freemont.
