Ford Airstream Concept (VIDEO)

Although teaming up with a company that builds stainless-steel RVs in order to create a concept vehicle might seem a little strange, the final result is interesting nonetheless.

The Airstream Concept is powered by a plug-in hydrogen hybrid fuel cell setup. It operates in electric mode at all times and delivers a combined city/highway fuel consumption average of 5.7 L/100 km (41 US MPG).

The hybrid powertrain is said to be already on the road for testing in a Ford Edge prototype. The fuel cell recharges the battery pack as needed. The powertrain can run 40 kilometers before the recharging process begins.

The overall appearance, with its mirror-like body, clearly resembles the Airstream trailers we've all seen on North-American roads for decades. The car was also inspired by Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. The passenger-side power clamshell door runs two-thirds the length of the vehicle.

On the inside, Kubrick's vision of the future is carried on with the color palette and materials used. The Airstream Concept maximizes its interior space and, according to Ford, creates a lounge-like atmosphere with its contrasting cosmic red and white colors.
