Motoring legend Carroll Shelby is working with Ford to make sure Mustang fans the world over have their chance to own something truly special.

The exclusive and powerful Mustang GT500KR was originally announced as a one-thousand-unit run of 2008 models to celebrate the icon's 40th anniversary. Ford says that demand for the new model was so incredible that an additional 746 cars will be created as 2009 models to meet worldwide demand. Of the additional 746 cars, 571 will be sold in the US- matching the 1,571 unit production run of the original car.

After causing a stir all over the internet and taking a starring role in the new "Night Rider" TV series, the 540 horsepower "King of the Road" will start being delivered to customers this spring. Every unit will be hand-customized and delivered to each customer in an enclosed transporter, just like the legendary Ford GT.

"The response to this car has been overwhelming, so I'm glad we can share it with more Mustang enthusiasts," said Carroll Shelby. "This car is really special to me and demonstrates that when Shelby Automobiles gets together with Ford SVT and Ford Racing, we can deliver a Mustang that will compete with the best in the world."

The car starts life in Michigan as a Ford-specification GT500 model before being shipped to Shelby's Las Vegas facility. While there, a Ford Racing Power Upgrade Pack is installed alongside a short-throw shifter, 3.73:1 rear axle, unique suspension parts and other go-fast goodies.

Best to burn rubber to your favorite Ford dealership if you're interested in getting your hands on one- as they'll sell out very quickly.
