After having survived on the competitive SUV market for several years, the Ford Escape and its European Kuga counterpart are bowing out, and their successor will be revealed at the Detroit Auto Show.

The new SUV will be built on Ford’s global C platform, the basis for vehicles such as the new 2012 Focus. But that doesn’t mean Ford will choose to use a single name worldwide for this replacement, and the automaker is still debating whether it should apply its “One Ford” strategy at all costs, which stipulates the use of a single name for its products around the world.

Also, according to rumours, assembly of the new iteration of the Kuga could be moved from the Saarlouis plant in Germany to the company’s Kentucky facilities, where the Escape and its hybrid variant are currently manufactured.

Production of the new SUV is set to start in the second half of 2012, with the model hitting dealerships in 2013.
