The newly created ECOGLOBE Award is given by Switzerland in recognition of a company's environmental protection efforts. It also aims to focus people's attention on green automobiles, particularly those bearing the "Flexifuel" name.

Ford Motor Company won the first-ever ECOGLOBE Award for its environmentally-friendly manufacturing operations. Indeed, all Flexifuel vehicles built by Ford can run on bioethanol, an alcohol-based fuel made from a blend of renewable raw material (plants) and unleaded premium gasoline. Any combination of these two resources is compatible with Flexifuel vehicles.

The jury, which had to evaluate the contestants and determine a winner, was made up of several renowned individuals: Professor Bruno Braun (Chairman of TÜV Rheinland Group), Professor Bernd von Droste-Hülshoff (Founding Director of UNESCO's Cultural World Heritage), Professor Ferdinand Dudenhöffer (FH Gelsenkirchen) and Matthias Wissmann (President of the German Automotive Industry Federation, VDA).

Ford executives said they are extremely proud to have received such distinction. Flexifuel vehicles help the auto industry in its efforts towards sustainable development.
