Peter Gethin, the winner of the highly exciting 1971 Italian Grand Prix for BRM, has died following a long illness.

Born February 21 1940, Ewell, U.K, Gethin took part in 30 World Championship Formula One Grands Prix.

He won the famous 1971 Italian Grand Prix in the fastest average speed in Formula One history (until the record was broken by Michael Schumacher). Gethin crossed the line just 0.01 seconds in front of Ronnie Peterson.

The Briton also raced for Team McLaren in the 1970 Canadian-American Challenge Cup series, driving the mighty McLaren M8D that had been driven by Dan Gurney in the first three races of the season. Gethin won one race and finished third in the 1970 Can-Am championship.

After a spell as a driver manager, he was appointed team manager at the Toleman F1 team in '84 (when Ayrton Senna was their driver), and later set-up his own team, Peter Gethin Racing, which raced in Formula 3000 in the latter part of the decade.
