About one out of five (22 percent) said they were “extremely confident” that gas will soon be too expensive to drive normally. Another 41 percent were “somewhat confident”.
Known for their love of big cars, trucks and SUVs that sip a lot of gas, American drivers are now starting to accept the fact that their driving habits will have to change in order to save money.
Meanwhile, a study by Scotia Economics revealed that small cars and compact SUVs accounted for an unprecedented 25 percent of all vehicles sold in Canada during the months of March and April.
How high will gas have to go before people opt for public transportation over driving? HNTB found the tipping point for 42 percent of those surveyed was $4.90 per gallon, or $1.29 per litre.
Upon writing these lines, the average price of gasoline in the U.S. according to gasbuddy.com was below $4 per gallon ($1.06 per litre).
