UPI has announced that E85 Ethanol Biofuel, which consists of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline, is now available at their EnviroStation in Chatham Ontario. Ethanol is a renewable biofuel that provides significantly lower lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions than gasoline, and recent Government of Canada studies show switching over to E85 fuel can achieve a net lifecycle reduction in greenhouse gas emissions ranging anywhere from 46% to 64%.

GM has made plenty of progress towards flex-fuel engines that can run on the cleaner fuel.

"At GM, we believe a wider diversity of greener fuels and vehicle technologies are necessary to reduce vehicle-related GHG's and offer more affordable choices for consumers," said David Paterson, vice-president corporate and environmental activities for General Motors of Canada. "E85 ethanol biofuel, used in our current wide selection of Flex-Fuel vehicles, offers one of the greatest near-term opportunities to reduce GHG emissions from vehicles. We will continue to work with governments in Canada to expand the availability of this E85 biofuel."

Some drivers even report experiencing increased engine performance and better fuel mileage when using E85 biofuel. Of course, since E85-carrying fueling stations are very limited, flex-fuel engines can run on any combination of E85 and regular gasoline from the same tank.

It's been said by more than one North American automaker: "change the fuel and you change everything". The UPI EnviroStation is a step in this direction.
