The popular Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain crossovers are about to become more fuel-efficient than ever, as GM plans to give them the gift of eAssist.
The technology, comprised of a small electric engine and a lithium-ion battery, allows a vehicle to run on electricity alone and shut the gas engine off when stopped.
The Buick LaCrosse and Regal, the only two models to call on eAssist at this time, burn 20% less fuel in town and 32% less on the highway than their gas-powered brethren.
In the case of our two crossovers, fuel consumption could drop to as little as 6.2 litres per 100 clicks. They’d be able to make quite a convincing case for themselves with buyers who are looking for a ute-type model but don’t want to take out a second mortgage to pay the fuel bills.
GM plans on introducing the eAssist Equinox and Terrain in 2013 as 2014 models.
The new Equinox should go by the name Equinox Eco.
