Mark Winterbottom and Richard Lyons took the win in the second race of the Gold Coast 600 weekend. Lyons, a UK-born racer, dedicated his victory to the late Dan Wheldon.

"To my friend Dan Wheldon who passed away, I've done this one for you mate", said Lyons.

Winterbottom and Lyons snatched the race away from Saturday winners Jamie Whincup and Sébastien Bourdais with only 10 laps remaining.

In the first stint, Lyons drove a steady race. His performance – and a mid-race caution – gave series' regular Winterbottom a fighting chance in the second half of the contest.

The safety car period helped Winterbottom and Lyons in two different ways: it bunched the field back up, but also delayed then second-place runners Craig Lowndes and Andy Priaulx. During the pit stop sequence triggered by the safety car's intervention, Lowndes was forced to queue behind the sister Triple 8 car of Whincup, which effectively put the two drivers out of contention.

As they say, timing is everything.

In third spot were Lee Holdsworth and Simon Pagenaud, from Greg Murphy and Oliver Gavin in fourth.

Alongside Kelly Holden team-mate, Alexandre Tagliani could only manage 11th.

Thanks to their win on Saturday and their second-place on Sunday, Bourdais is rewarded with the Dan Wheldon Memorial trophy, awarded to the best international driver, and Whincup leaves Surfers Paradise with the points lead in the series.
