Two separate studies of data from hundreds of thousands of miles indicate that Google’s cars accelerated and braked significantly more sharply when a person was behind the wheel. The driverless cars also maintain a safer distance from the vehicle ahead.

Google has been testing its autonomous vehicle technology on public roads since 2010, always with a human in the driver’s seat who can take over if necessary.
