Grand-Am Road racing has announced changes to fuel cell capacity and fuel hose restrictors that will be applicable as of next race, in Virginia, on May 14.

The Daytona Prototypes cars of the Rolex Sports Car Series currently use a 24-gallon fuel cells that allow them to race approximately 55 minutes on a full fuel load.

In comparison, the new fuel cell capacity will be of 20-gallons which will reduce the maximum racing time to less than 45 minutes.

The GT cars will also be affected as Mazdas’ fuel cells will also drop from 24 to 20 gallons and all other cars from 22 to 18.5 gallons.

These changes will have the direct consequence of requiring teams to make an additional pit stop during races.

Teams will therefore be allowed to introduce a third driver or an additional driver change. Fuelling is expected to take the same amount of time.
