Scott Pruett managed to reduce to only one the number of tracks he has never won a Grand-Am Road Racing race on by winning Sunday’s event at the New Jersey Motorsports Park.

It was a fifth victory for Pruett and co-driver Memo Rojas this season. The defending champions did not have it easy though and took the lead only in the last hour as a result of a drive-through penalty for a contact with Taylor at the beginning of the race.

Max Angelelli, whose teammate Ricky Taylor had gotten them yet another pole position in New Jersey, made a brilliant pass on Alex Gurney in final stages of this race. Gurney was then unable to regain his position and settled for third with co-driver Jon Fogarty.

Pruett and Rojas are pulling away in the standing, slowly but surely, with a gap of 29 points on Angelelli and Taylor. Gurney and Fogarty are third in the standing, 45 points behind the current leaders.

In GT class, Quebecker Sylvain Tremblay and co-driver Jonathan Bomarito, driving a Mazda RX-8, gave the brand its first victory of the season.

The pressure was there in the class with pole-sitter John Edwards (Wayne Nonnamaker) finishing less than one second behind its rival (0.685). James Gue and Dane Cameron completed the all Mazda RX-8 podium.

Jordan Taylor and co-driver Bill Lester finished fourth to come back on their main rivals in the standing. They are now trailing Andrew Davis and Leh Keen, victims of a thrown alternator belt in New Jersey, by only one point.

Next race will be held at the Watkins Glen International course on Saturday, August 13. There are only three races left to this 2011 season.
