Don't let the reduced media coverage fool you – Japanese automakers are still scrambling to get back on track after the massive earthquake and tsunami that devastated the country and jeopardized the entire car production chain.

On Monday, Honda Motor Co. alerted its U.S. dealers to scant availability in coming months of some models built only in Japan, including the Fit, CR-Z, Insight and Civic Hybrid.

The all-new 2012 Honda Civic will also be produced at "significantly reduced levels", John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda, told them in a memo.

In addition, the launch of the 2012 CR-V will be delayed by at least a month. It was initially scheduled for this fall, but no exact date had been announced.

Honda's premium division finds itself in a similarly precarious situation. Acura dealers have been told that their June-July vehicle allocations would be the lowest, while the Japanese-built TSX and RL might be unavailable until later in the year.
