Common Issues With A Used Hyundai Santa Fe: Start your test drive with a check of all interior electronics, paying special attention to the windows, motorized seats and automatic climate control system (if equipped). Several reports of climate control system problems have surfaced online.

Look for signs of dampness in the carpeting in the front driver and passenger-side footwells, which could cause mold or rust. The water-leak causing this dampness could be caused by an improperly installed windshield.

“Feel” the automatic transmission shifting, especially in newer models. Note that any hard shifting or hesitation is likely caused by a faulty computer brain which controls the gearbox, and likely, a solenoid inside.

Check the condition of the brakes and tires, ensuring both have plenty of life remaining. Some Santa Fe owners have reported lower-than-expected durability from these consumable items. Low-quality factory tires are also blamed by some owners for strange vibrations at highway speeds.

Bad powertrain sensors, including camshaft position sensors and oxygen sensors appear to be a somewhat common issue, as well. A faulty sensor could result in a “check engine” light, reduced performance, or even hard stalling and rough idle. Note any of these issues, and have a Hyundai mechanic electronically “scan” the Santa Fe in question, just to be sure. A check of the Santa Fe’s suspension is also advised.

The Verdict Of The Used Hyundai Santa Fe: Santa Fe looks to be a fairly attractive bet in a used crossover thanks to fairly solid reliability, decent prices and no worrisome reports of major or systematic problems. A pre-purchase once-over by a Hyundai mechanic is recommended for maximum peace of mind.
