German automaker BMW was present in a big way at last week's Los Angeles Auto Show, with company personnel on hand to talk to the media and public about the exciting year to come. With upcoming diesel technology, hybrids, and other new models, it's going to be a very busy year, too.

BMW 1-Series

The 1-Series is readying for launch. Described as a modern take on the old BMW 2002, it will come available with a pair of inline-six cylinder engines, making up to 300 horsepower. BMW's Tom Purves says the new compact model is "BMW distilled to its purest form. It epitomizes pure excitement, pure power and the purest driving experience." A convertible model will also be available.

On the other end of BMW's model lineup is news that the Concept CS- a Grand Touring car positioned above the 7-Series- will be produced in the future.

The X6 and X6 Active Hybrid concepts were introduced earlier this year, and will also be coming to life as BMW has announced work on preparing production versions of both machines. A smaller X1 'Sport Activity Vehicle' will be available as well.

On the diesel front, shoppers can expect the option of a high-performance twin-turbo diesel engine for 2009, with low emissions, great economy and near-V12 torque output.

Of course, the buzz with performance buffs is about the new M3, which will be available in a coupe or a sedan model packing 420 clean horsepower from a new V8 engine. Adjustable driver dynamics and unparalleled handling potential endow the legendary driving machine with stand-out performance, and the new car uses less fuel than the previous generation too.

Saving fuel and boosting performance? Sounds win-win to us.
