Josef Newgarden (Sam Schmidt) earned his third victory of the season at the Iowa Speedway, improving his championship points lead from 13 to 46 over teammate Esteban Guerrieri.

Guerrieri, who had earned the pole, had to retire midway through the race with a mechanical issue (radiator) and was credited with 12th place.

Gustavo Yacaman, driving the No. 2 TMR-Tuvacol-Xtreme Coil Drilling car, recorded a Firestone Indy Lights-best runner-up finish.

Bryan Clauson (Sam Schmidt), competing in his third Firestone Indy Lights oval race, was 5.8 seconds behind but finished a season-high third.

The USAC champion also set the fastest lap of the race on Lap 69 (20.120 seconds). Then, still running third, he improved that to 20.090 seconds on Lap 82. Five laps later, he circled the .875-mile Iowa Speedway oval at a field-best 20.036 seconds.

Victor Garcia, advanced eight positions to finish fourth in the No. 22 TMR-Xtreme Coil Drilling car.

Duarte Ferreira posted a season-best fifth place in the No. 28 Bryan Herta Autosport car.
