Canadian James Hinchcliffe’s race in Toronto did not go as expected as he crashed in the last lap of the Indy Lights championship Toronto 100 while fighting for a podium finish.
“Hinch” was running in second behind race winner JK. Vernay when he crashed into the wall finishing in 10th spot, strengthening Vernay's hold on first place in the driver standings, giving him a 68-point cushion over Hinchcliffe in second.
Hinchcliffe said he started losing grip on the car as the race wore on, and felt as though he had burned through his rear tires by the time of his collision.
With a line forming behind him, Hinchcliffe's race met its end in the fifth turn of the final lap, when he made contact with rival Charlie Kimball who still managed to finish fourth.
Hinchcliffe is midway through his second season in the series. The 23-year-old won his first series race this year in Long Beach, leading the race all the way from the pole position.
The other Canadian race, Ottawa's Philip Major finished 12th on Sunday, four laps off the lead, after slipping into a tire barrier early in the race.
