Dario Franchitti (Ganassi) will start first at the Grand Prix of Long Beach due to the fact that, contrary to the fastest driver, Ryan Briscoe (Team Penske), he is the only one not to get a 10-place grid penalty for having had his engine replaced.

Still, Briscoe will at least get the extra point for having been the fastest driver at the end of the Fast-Six shootout.

Briscoe clocked his fastest run at 1min08.6089s, merely 0.0984 seconds ahead of his teammate Will Power.

Andretti's Ryan Hunter-Reay was third-fastest in the session ahead of Franchitti, EJ Viso (KV Racing) and James Hinchcliffe (Andretti).

Sarah Fisher Hartman rookie Josef Newgarden, who finished 7th will start alongside Franchitti on the front row while Dale Coyne Racing's Justin Wilson will be moved up to third on the grid once the penalties are assessed, with Briscoe to line up in 11th place.

Simon Pagenaud (Schmidt Motorsport) will move up to fourth just in front of Scott Dixon (Ganassi) who will complete the top five even though his gearbox went up in flames a couple of time during the session.

All 11 of the Chevrolet-powered cars and three Lotus-powered cars were hit with 10 place grid penalties going into the session after making unauthorized engine changes.
