Following his serious accident at the end of the second IndyCar race in the streets of Houston, Dario Franchitti has sustained a concussion and two fractures according to the medical staff at Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Centre.

As his car ran into Takuma Sato's DW12, Franchitti was launched airborne and into the catch fencing where his car rolled then bounced back into the middle of the track.

The Scot was brought to a medical center where he was assessed and found to have suffered a concussion, a fractured vertebra that will not require surgery, and a fractured right ankle.

Meanwhile, officials have confirmed that 14 spectators were injured when a piece of catch fencing that was torn loose during Franchitti's accident landed in a nearby grandstand.
