Because of problems with the surface of the Belle Isle circuit, the IndyCar event in Detroit had to be shortened due to emergency repairs that had to be done and Ganassi's Scott Dixon finally won after a two-hour delay.

Polesitter Dixon led every lap of the supposed 90-lap event but, at the midway point, enormous strips of asphalt were coming loose, forcing for a red flag to allow track workers to implement a fix.

It all started when Andretti Autosport's James Hinchcliffe first hit huge asphalt debris that sent him flying in a tire barrier on lap 45.

The green flag was eventually given but the original distance reduced from 90 laps to 60 and almost immediately, yellows were needed again when Penske's Helio Castroneves spun and was tagged by Ed Carpenter.

A few laps later, EJ Viso (KV Racing) spun and stalled in the middle of Turn 4.

Simon Pagenaud (Schmidt-Hamilton) took second from the hand of Will Power (Penske) while behind him; Dario Franchitti had gotten himself up to sixth after starting 14th.

Then, the Indianapolis 500 winner managed to pass three cars at the same time that Pagenaud was overtaking Power.

On the final restart, Franchitti took second from Pagenaud making it a 1-2-3 for Honda.
