Team Penske's Will Power was able to hold off Ganassi's Dario Franchitti's and Scott Dixon's attacks and earned pole and the first spot on the starting grid for the upcoming IndyCar Sao Paulo round.
Reigning champion Franchitti lost out by a mere 0.04 seconds while his teammate Dixon was a further 0.4s back.
Canadian James Hinchcliffe (Andretti Autpsport) continued to show that he was among the series' fastest drivers by putting himself fourth on the grid, just ahead of teammate Ryan Hunter-Reay and Dale Coyne's Justin Wilson.
Rahal Letterman Lanigan's Takuma Sato was unable to take part in qualifying at all because he was having his engine changed. The former Formula 1 driver will start from the back of the grid.
