Australian Will Power finished the first day of practice in front of everyone else and led a 1-2 effort from KV Racing Technologies while teammate Oriol Servia finished second at the Rexall Edmonton Indy.
Team Penske's Helio Castroneves, for who it was his first experience on this airport circuit, completed Thursday program in third spot.
Servia credited the familiarity of the team and their drivers with the Edmonton circuit for the speed shown by KVRT, but cautioned about complacency.
But the star of the day was truly Paul Tracy, who was driving for the first time in a third Vision Racing car prepared by Derrick Walker Racing, and was credited with the eighth fastest time of the day.
