Following his stunning accident in last Sunday’s Indianapolis 500, Dreyer & Reinbold’s driver Briton Mike Conway will be out for at least the next three months of the IndyCar Series season.
On the last lap of the race, Conway’s Dallara-Honda made contact with Ryan Hunter-Reay’s car as the Andretti Autosport driver was slowing down, running very low on fuel.
The car ripped in half in the impact, with the cockpit section coming to rest upside down on the track. Conway was immediately diagnosed with leg injuries, and damage to his back was also discovered in hospital.
Conway had to undergo surgery to repair fractures to his lower left leg. Additionally, he had a compression fracture of one of his thoracic vertebrae and had to be fitted for a back brace, which he will wear for three months and will prevent him from racing.
It appears that American Hunter-Reay also had surgery for an injury to his left thumb but he is expected to recover in time for next weekend’s Texas race, which could be his last race of the season. The Andretti Autosport driver will have to wear a carbon fibre splint however.
