The Indy Racing League governing body has decided to alter the points system so that the pole winner can earn an extra point on any race weekend during the upcoming season.
Instead of giving three points solely to the driver who led the most lap during a race, the winner of the pole will now be awarded one point where the lap leader will have two from now on.
The point system for each race - descending from 50 for first place, 40 for second, 35 for third, etc. - will remain unchanged.
