After dominating Friday morning practice session at Chicagoland, Team Penske's Ryan Briscoe took pole position in the afternoon for a third consecutive year.
The Australian was nearly 0.2 seconds quicker than Ganassi's Dario Franchitti who will also start from the front row.
Series leader Will Power and team-mate Helio Castroneves will start Saturday night race from third and fourth respectively.
Marco Andretti was the fastest of all Andretti Autosport drivers with a fifth. Both Newman/Haas' drivers Graham Rahal and Hideki Mutoh took sixth and eighth, split by a good run from Dan Wheldon (Panther).
Despite crashing just five laps into practice on his return to the series, Ed Carpenter put the Panther/Vision car 11th while Conquest newcomer Tomas Scheckter ended up in 17th.
As for Canadian Alex Tagliani (FAZZT Racing) he could only managed a distant 19th which was better off still than his 24th position after this morning practice.
There will be a further 30 minutes of practice later today as the race will be taking place under lights on Saturday evening.
