But it was not easy as the Australian had to make a last ditch effort at the end of the Fast-Six shoot-out to finally secure pole by a mere 0.037 seconds in front of team-mate Helio Castroneves.
Ganassi’s Dario Franchitti, Power's nearest title rival, was nearly half a second behind in third.
Alex Tagliani (FAZZTRacing) showed that his practice pace was not odd as he took a well-deserved fourth place, pushing Ryan Briscoe (Penske) and Scott Dixon (Ganassi) back to the third row.
