The "elegant and spacious 2+2 cabin makes no compromises on luxury and craftsmanship," says Callum. Interior trim options include traditional premium leather and two choices of rich wood as well as a contemporary aluminium trim. The driver is the centre of attention, with everything tailored to their needs - including the 40-plus functions accessible from the touch screen in the centre console.

The all-new XK features technologies that are engineered to empower, not overpower, Cross points out, and make life easier. "Controls and convenience features are intuitive and focused, giving drivers and their passengers maximum control without complication."

Two-stage Dynamic Stability Control allows enthusiasts to enhance their own control levels, multi-function Adaptive Cruise Control is available to make driving even more relaxing, a Tire Pressure Monitoring System runs constantly, and the new Advanced Front Lighting System offers the opportunity to specify "active" headlights.

The steering wheel also has little paddles for the six-speed automatic, so aggressive drivers can do their own shifting.

Details of the convertible version of the XK will come later this year, and prices for the coupe will be announced early in 2006. Both cars will be on sale in the spring of 2006.

The current base version of the XK coupe retails for $95,350 while the convertible goes for $105,350, but it's not clear where Jaguar will price them for 2007.

For competition, the Jaguar is mostly up against the Cadillac XLR and the Mercedes-Benz SL, with a nod to Ferrari and Maserati.

As for Jaguar ever coming up with a better look than the XKE, well that's like asking Mr. and Mrs. Monroe to top Marilyn.
