With the slew of new model debuts taking place at NAIAS this week, Johnson Controls may not have been on anyone's radar for a concept car presentation. The company is primarily known as a supplier for automotive OEMs and is the maker of the popular HomeLink universal remote system.

According to Johnson Controls, a major company goal is finding new opportunities to help their customers succeed by creating "smart" environments- which refers to weight reduction, cost optimization and sustainable solutions. Their re3 concept vehicle recently put this philosophy onto the stage at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS).

Aimed at the growing small-car segment, re3's name references the three pillar elements on which it's built. These consist of rethink, renew and respond- referring to challenging the perception of the small car, delivering it with a sustainable interior and creating a holistic experience through man / machine interaction, respectively.

Johnson officials say that the re3 offers lots of room in a small space, fuel efficient and environmentally friendly operation and a compromise-free approach to features and functions. The re3 features a new plug in hybrid battery system, a unique storage space built into the instrument panel and an 'extended cluster' which adds a 7-inch touch-screen display to the standard gauges. There's also a central controller on the arm-rest and a conversational seating arrangement to encourage a more easygoing and enjoyable ride.

It's all in the name of offering big things in a smaller space while respecting the environment at the same time.

"Our re3 concept shows how we can redesign and improve the interior of a small vehicle to meet the needs of consumers while adding tremendous value for our customers," said Jeff Williams, group VP and general manager of Automotive Experience business at Johnson Controls. "People want smaller vehicles with better fuel economy, eco-friendly materials and the luxuries and utility that make the driving experience enjoyable, and the re3 is a great demonstration of our ability to help meet these needs through innovation."
