A recent survey conducted by the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) and the Groupement des Assureurs Automobile (GAA) revealed that roughly 80% of insured people believe that they are well informed about their coverage when in fact; more than 66% are erroneous in their assumptions.

For example, many believe that should items be stolen from their car that their car insurance policy will cover the losses. The truth is that the home insurance policy covers the loss of personal goods. Likewise, many still think that the exterior colour of their vehicle influences premiums; this is untrue.

The IBC and the GAA have released a guide that demystifies the whole car and house insurance question, informs consumers on which type of coverage is best for their needs and even includes tips on how to try and avoid theft.
