Maserati: New products to boost sales

While many people are expecting Maserati to unveil the Quattroporte’s replacement sometime this year, the Italian automaker says it’s currently working on a sedan and SUV that will help increase worldwide sales to 20,000 units.

Code-named M157, the future sedan will reportedly go head to head with the swankier variants of BMW’s 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz’s E-Class. It will become the brand’s entry-level model at its launch in 2014 or thereabouts, with a price tag of approximately 75,000 USD.

The SUV should hit markets sooner though, in 2012 or 2013. Borrowing elements common to several Jeep and Alfa Romeo models, it will feature a distinctive style, an elegant cabin and a choice of more powerful engines – one of which will be shared with Ferrari.

The Quattroporte’s replacement, dubbed M156, will make its first appearance on stage at the Frankfurt Motor Show this fall. It will be powered by an improved, less alcoholic version of the current 4.7-litre V8. Penned entirely by Maserati, the new car is reportedly inspired from the coupe and convertible versions of the Gran Turismo.

In 2010, the manufacturer sold 5,675 units; 2008 was the brand’s best-ever year, with sales peaking at 8,600 vehicles.
