According to a report from the Nikkei Financial Daily, Mazda is planning to end its joint venture with Ford and even stop building vehicles in the United States, transferring production to Japan by 2013 in a shakeup of its worldwide manufacturing operations.

If the report does tell the truth, Mazda would also sell its stake in the venture to Ford. The two respectively manufacture the Mazda6 and Mustang in the same plant, more specifically in Flat Rock, Mich.

The possible departure of Mazda would obviously strike a blow at the American auto industry, which is barely recovering from its 2009 crisis.

For now, let's not panic and take the Nikkei Financial Daily's story too seriously. Mazda has yet to make any comments.
