Does Mercedes-Benz’s Vision SLA concept ring a bell? Eleven years after its debut at the Detroit Auto Show, it looks like the German automaker will be bringing it to life in 2013 to take on Audi the TT.
The new car will reportedly be built on the 2012 B-Class platform, which means the sporty addition to the Merc family will feature a front-wheel drive. Purists will likely be outraged, as the automaker has historically favoured rear-wheel-drive systems for its roadsters (take the SLK, for instance).
In North America, the SLA will sing to the tune of a 1.6-litre, turbocharged four and it looks like Mercedes is also considering a 1.8-litre, turbodiesel mill for the European market.
Style-wise, the production version will differ considerably from the concept but retain similar dimensions.
