But it is not so easy to do in the SLK because of the knee bolsters that MB added at the lower part of the dashboard. I always knock my knees on them. Or then, I have to back my seat and I feel a little uncomfortably too far away from the wheel.

Storage space is at a minimum in the SLK. There are large side pockets in the doors and a few glove and console compartments but it is almost impossible to cram in a small briefcase or handbag. Also, if you intend to lower the steel roof (it parks itself in the trunk where it eats up a lot of space), you have to pull a fabric cover in the trunk (otherwise, its integrated switch will not allow the top to come down) and that also tells you how much depth is available for luggage (in our case, barely enough for two small suitcases laid flat!)

Another annoying Mercedes-Benz feature that we complain about in almost all the make's cars is the cruise control stalk set too close to the flasher stalk. I still confuse them most of the time as did my buddy Jacques when he took his turn for driving.

By the way, he is a six-footer and he found a comfortable position to drive the car but he had to use up as much space as he could. Finally, let's point out that to put the car in reverse (manual transmission), the driver has to PULL the lever UP! A very unusual maneuver!

All in all, Mercedes did a fine job in retouching its beautiful SLK. Incidentally, it is still available with its four-banger as well as the new V6 and in a Sport trim. Prices will vary from $54,350 for a four-cylinder, manual transmission SLK 230 to $61,650 for a base SLK320 automatic. Naturally, add to this the price of the options (more than $8,000 for the AMG appearance package!) and taxes.
