As fast as possible, and as safe as possible- that was the goal from square-one for Mitsubishi's Evolution X high-performance sedan. Fitted with the very latest in automotive technology, the all wheel drive, turbocharged rocket will go on sale in Japan today with a tax-inclusive price ranging from 2,997,750 to 3,750,600 yen or about $26,000 to about $32,380 CAD.

Cutting-edge features include the Super All Wheel Control vehicle dynamics system and a new Twin Clutch Sport Shift Transmission which increases performance and efficiency. Speaking of power, the new engine, a two-litre turbocharged unit made extensively of aluminum, is capable of 422 nm of torque (or about 311 lb.-ft) across a broad rev-range. Mitsubishi says a revised turbocharger setup is more efficient and provides enhanced response compared to previous Evo's.

There will be two Evo X models: an 'entry' RS and a loaded GSR. Two drivetrains will be available- both are full-time AWD, with one model offering the Super All Wheel Control system. A five-speed manual transmission or the six-speed twin-clutch box is available- depending on the car selected.

Mitsubishi says that the Lancer Evolution represents the zenith of the Lancer badge's performance development as a rally racing story that began over 30 years ago in the deserts of the Safari Rally. Later, it also saw dominance on the WRC stage in the 1990's, and now combines the lessons from competition with high technology to bring an enthusiasts' hero to the streets.
