Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) narrowed the gap on his team-mate, as current leader Valentino Rossi finds himself a mere 18 points ahead of the young Spaniard with three races to go.

Lorenzo’s last win, at Estoril, was the tenth for Yamaha this year, leaving the manufacturer one short of its most successful year ever – 2005. A Yamaha win at the next GP, in Australia, would equal the longest-ever sequence of successive victories for Yamaha in MotoGP, now set at 5 consecutive wins, a feat they achieved in both 2005 and 2008.

In his twelve visits at Phillip Island, across all GP classes, Rossi totals eleven podium finishes, with five consecutive MotoGP victories from 2001-2005.

Casey Stoner’s impressive return to action in Portugal, second behind Lorenzo, will surely add to the action. His two consecutive wins there will add a key player to the front group. Add Honda’s Dani Pedrosa to this lead pack, as he is now recovered from his crash at Indianapolis, finishing third at Misano and Estoril. These two are 3 points apart in the Championship, so expect a battle at that level also.

The show will be interesting, with two riders interested only in winning, and two others looking only to beat each other. Watch Rossi try to put some riders between himself and Lorenzo, who is never afraid to try desperate moves to move forward.

The 2009 Australian Grand Prix takes place from October 16th-18th.
