Milverton, Ontario, native Scott Steckly is coming to the Grand Prix of Trois-Rivieres as the NASCAR Canadian Tire series’ championship leader, 20 points ahead of St-Thomas, Ontario, native D.J. Kennington.
Despite the lead, Steckly will have to be on his guards this weekend with JR Fitzpatrick (Cambridge, Ontario) and long-time rival Andrew Ranger (Roxton Pond, Quebec) on track.
Fitzpatrick and Ranger have been fighting each other’s since the second race in the history of the series. They are even more renowned for their hard-felt battles in the streets of Trois-Rivieres in the past couple of years, leaving Ranger with three wins and a runner-up finish.
But with a schedule of NASCAR K&N in 2011, Ranger only figures in 27th position of the standing before the GP3R with Fitzpatrick in fourth, behind Don Thompson Jr.
In fact, the top-9 contenders are from the province of Ontario with Kerry Micks, Mark Dilley, Ron Beauchamp Jr, Jason Hathaway and Jason White. The only non-Ontario native currently in the top-10 in the standings is Kahnawake (Quebec) native Dexter Stacey, in 10th position.
TSN will broadcast the GP3R 100 in its entirety after the NASCAR Sprint Cup broadcast on Sunday afternoon.
Meanwhile, the NAPA Autopro 100 confirmed there are 37 cars registered for the next NASCAR Canadian Tire race in Montreal at the end of August. It is four more (so far) than in Trois-Rivieres this weekend. Thirty cars will participate in the event.
