During a recent test at Homestead Miami Speedway, Scott Pruett was behind the wheel of one of Chip Ganassi's ARCA car to conduct test for tire supplier Firestone which lead to speculation about a possible return to the stock car series.

Although Firestone is the official supplier of tires for the IndyCar series, the manufacturer has not been involved in stock car racing for more than 34 years. Al Speyer, the executive director of Firestone/Bridgestone Motorsports, says it was not an official Firestone test nor was it a NASCAR test.

"We've been out of stock cars since 1974 and stock car application is totally different," he said. "If we don't start some fundamental work, we couldn't be prepared if a sanctioning body decides to make a change."

Goodyear has been the sole supplier of tires to NASCAR since 2000 and its contract is set to run until 2011 but several recent incidents, including at the Brickyard 400 and Atlanta, has seen the tire maker come under heavy fire for its rubber.
