A few NASCAR Sprint Cup teams were a little nervous on Friday afternoon because there was rain in the forecast around the Martinsville Speedway. But the rain held off and qualifying went on.

Short track veteran Jeff Gordon (Chevy No 24) nailed the first place closely followed by Denny Hamlin (Camry No 11) and Aric Almirola (Chevy No 8).

Canada's Patrick Carpentier (Dodge No 10) has very little experience on such a track but he still qualified 37th among the 43 drivers allowed.

Four drivers had to go home because they could not go fast enough: Kyle Petty (Dodge No 45), John Andretti (Chevy No 34), Tony Raines (Dodge No 08) and Joe Nemechek (Chevy No 78).
