Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Joey Logano and Kyle Busch led practice for the Bud Shootout on Friday night at speeds greater than 203mph in Toyotas.

Michael Waltrip, the semi-retired, two-time Daytona 500 winner, was third fastest in another Toyota over 202mph.

The second of two practice session was delayed due to the backstretch lights going out.

Take note that Roush Fenway Ford driver Matt Kenseth was fastest in a 10-lap average run at 197.774mph but only 10th fastest by himself.

His teammate Carl Edwards was second fastest at 197.725mph averaged over ten miles but 9th fastest by himself.

Since NASCAR targets 200mph as a speed cap, it’s likely that the sanctioning body may publish new restrictor plate rules to slow down the cars in anticipation of next Sunday’s Daytona 500. As of Saturday morning no major change has been announced.

The fastest official speed, at the 2.5 mile Superspeedway was set by Bill Elliott at 210.364 mph, prior to the mandatory restrictor plates intended to keep speeds under 200mph for safety reasons.

Two-time Shoot-Out winner Dale Earnhardt Jr., who was 16th fastest in Shootout practice in a Chevrolet, drew the pole position in the 24-car field for the 75-lap non-points race scheduled for Saturday evening.
