The first time Marcos Ambrose met Richard Petty he said he was intimidated by the “King”.

Now the Aussie will be driving one of the King’s cars; taking over the No. 9 Ford Fusion which will be vacated by Kasey Kahne at the end of the year.

“Who would have thought that this Tazmanian little kid could one day drive for The King,” said Ambrose on a teleconference to announce a multi-year deal with sponsorship from Stanley Tools.

“We are very happy to have Marcos Ambrose join our team,” said NASCAR Hall of Famer and team co-owner Richard Petty. “He’s a very talented and passionate driver and will be a great addition to our team.”

At 33-years of age Ambrose decided that he had to leave his current team, JTG-Daugherty because he felt there was something lacking in the equipment, not a personal problem with any of the owners. In 70 Cup starts he has six top-five finishes. He has three wins in the Nationwide series all coming at Watkins Glen.

“It was time for a change,” Ambrose said. “I felt I had to (move on) if I was going to survive in the sport.

"It was safe over there for me; I wasn't going to get fired," he said. "But it wasn't what I came to America to do.

We were a one-car team we had issues to deal with that others didn’t,” Ambrose said. He’d come to NASCAR after winning two Supercar V8 championships in Asia with the help and guidance of Ford. So the return to the blue oval company was a natural fit.

RPM's car gives him the best opportunity to do that. It’s “the best chance I’ve had so far to try and consistently run up front. I feel like I’ve got all the ingredients it will eliminate all the question marks about stuff around me,” he said.

“I believe I'm as good as anybody out there and can win four championships, just like Jimmie Johnson can."

Budweiser backs Richard Childress driver Kevin Harvick
In another, sponsor-related NASCAR announcement, Richard Childress Racing announced a multi-year deal to have Budweiser Beer as the primary sponsor of the #29 Chevrolet to be driven by Kevin Harvick.

The brewer will be the primary sponsor on 20 Cup points paying races and will be an associate on the remaining ones.

Harvick’s current sponsor, Shell/Pennzoil, is going to Penske Racing next year.
