Mother Nature took aim on the Charlotte Motor Speedway on Friday with intermittent rain washing out qualifying for both the All-Star Race and the Showdown.
Kurt Busch, driving a Dodge wins the pole for the All-Star race as a result of a draw, rather than points. With a big smile Busch recalls a racing cliché:
“It feels great. It puts us that much closer to a million dollars. Just to have track position early on in the race and to get a good feel for how the car will handle out front, I’m excited about it. Sometimes, it’s better to be lucky than good. My boat put the best lap down today.”
Joey Logano who will debut in the multi-segment non-points race starts second. Brad Keselowski, who earned a spot by virtue of his victory in Talladega last year is third in a Dodge and Daytona 500 winner, Jamie McMurray will start fourth.
Casey Mears, who is substituting for the ailing Brian Vickers, was given permission by NASAR to participate in the event and will take the green from ninth spot.
Rain also washed out qualifying for NASCAR’s Showdown, a preliminary race which gives drivers another shot at the big prize. All but four drivers had put in qualifying runs.
Juan Pablo Montoya had the fastest time but lost out due to rain. He was relegated to 14th starting spot.
David Ragan gets the pole for the 40-lapper based on qualifying order. Italy’s Max Papis get the outside pole.
The Camping World Truck race start was delayed about two hours due to the same atmospheric conditions.
