Joey Logano won the pole for the Pocono Sprint Cup race, by observing his teammate’s qualifying lap.

“I watched it on TV,” Logano said. “I learned a little bit just by watching and obviously talking to Denny (Hamlin) because he is really good here. I am kind of picking his brain all the time.”

Because he wasn’t one of the top cars in practice, Logano, who turned a lap of 172.055 mph, had to wait for another 20 drivers to go out to lock up his second pole of the year, his third in his Sprint Cup career.

Not known as road racer Logano had also won the pole at Infineon Raceway in June. “It surprised me,” he admitted. “Two poles this year at places that I’ve never really qualified well at. It goes to show how hard all my guys have been working and trying to figure out certain things.”

Kasey Kahne made it an all-Toyota front row at 171.648 mph, while Martin Truex Jr. took third fastest in yet another Toyota at 171.494 mph.

“It’s definitely good to start up front here,” said Kahne. “I think it helps a little bit. This race is so long and the strategy and things that happen throughout it -- being up front early on isn’t everything, but it’s definitely not a bad thing.”

Carl Edwards, the series points leader who put an end to speculations on who he would be driving for next year when he announced a renewal at Roush Fenway Racing, will start fourth in a Ford Fusion (171.474 mph).

“I actually beat Ryan Newman in qualifying here at Pocono, so that’s huge,” Edwards said. “I’m proud of my lap. I’ve got to say that Joey Logano’s lap was a very, very fast lap. Mine felt amazing, so he did a really good job and now we’ll go race.”

Newman had been fastest in practice but was only 12th in qualifying.
