NASCAR: Steve Hallam leaves Michael Waltrip Racing

Briton, Steve Hallam, currently Executive Vice President of Competition at Michael Waltrip Racing, will be joining Walkinshaw Racing in the V-8 Supercar series as Managing Director at the beginning of 2012.

Hallam who had come from Formula as head of race operations for the McLaren Mercedes to the United States in and joined MWR before the 2009 season after 27 years as an engineer and manager. His statistics include 445 Grands Prix and six world championships.

As a race engineer Hallam worked with Formula 1 driver’s champions such as Ayrton Senna, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, and Mika Hakkinen.

“Having been fortunate to have worked with some of the great brands in motorsport, it is with real excitement I have accepted the role of Managing Director for Walkinshaw Racing”, Hallam said.

“The Toll Holden Racing team has exceptional history and we have terrific talent throughout the organisation. When this opportunity was presented, it was one that I couldn’t let pass. I look forward to getting on the ground in Australia, and start contributing to the future success of the team”.

“Like many in motorsport I have always considered the V8 Supercar series as one of the ‘classic’ racing series, which marries great competition with some iconic race settings like Philip Island, and Mount Panorama”, added Hallam.

“Steve is one of the world’s great gentlemen. He’s been working on special projects for Rob Kauffman and myself over the last several months. We have been blessed to have the past two years with Steve and fully support his new racing venture,” said Michael Waltrip, owner of MWR.

The V8 Supercar series is primarily based in Australia with events in New Zealand and other countries.

“Steve’s wealth of experience with truly exceptional racing outfits is exactly what we were looking for when we began our search. We really couldn’t be happier that Steve has agreed to lead the team”, said Director of Walkinshaw Racing, Ryan Walkinshaw.

“Someone with Steve’s pedigree in engineering and race operations, as well as has general management capabilities makes him a great leader for our organisation. Everyone in the team is looking forward to working with him”, added Walkinshaw.

Holden Racing is a joint venture of TWR and General Motors. Marcos Ambrose, the most recent winner in Sprint Cup, is a two-time champion of the V-8 Supercar series.
