While Tony Stewart is best known as an owner driver in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup series; he is making a return trip to Australia, to race along with his World of Outlaws sprint car driver Donny Schatz, in a kind of return to his early days of racing.
They’ll be joined All-Star Series Champ, Tim Shaffer at Sydney’s Tyrepower Parramatta City Raceway later this month to compete in four of the biggest events on Australia’s speedway calendar.
The two-time Cup champ started out racing sprint cars before a foray into the IndyCar series then over to NASCAR. Stewart, also known as “Smoke”, won numerous championships along the way including a trifecta of USAC Championships (Midget, Sprint Car and Silver Crown) during 1995. Early in his career he competed in a limited schedule at Parramatta City Raceway.
“After starting his own NASCAR team at the beginning of the year Tony has had a very long year and his main focus is to come to Australia to unwind while enjoying some time away from the pressure of racing at the top level,” said Garry Rush, who will field cars for Stewart and Schatz and a director of the company promoting the races.
“However, he is a true racer at heart and has jumped at the opportunity we have provided him to race at Tyrepower Parramatta Raceway while combining it with some holiday activities both around Sydney and other parts of Australia.”
